Mansfield Coal and Mining Company. Organized in 1849 to take over the Wading Shaft of the previously failed "Mansfield Mining Company". This shaft was in West Mansfield, about 1/2 mile west of Harden Farm. The mine was renamed "The Sawyer Mine" after the new Operations Manager, Benjamin F. Sawyer. In 1852, the company was granted a charter to build a railroad from the mine to the Boston and Providence Railroad in Mansfield. It was probably never built. The mine produced some coal but at great expense and was closed for good around 1855.
Stock. Issued in 1849. #113.
