Lowell Co-operative Milk Association.   Organized in 1884.

A creamery established by Lowell farmers to resell milk, butter and other dairy products. Prior to such creameries, milk men would buy milk directly from farms and resell it to consumers. This was highly inefficient from the farmers point of view since it forced them to extend credit to milk men, which they often failed to pay back, and squeezed margins as milk men could force the farmers to compete against each other on price and terms after the milk was produced. Creameries organized the distribution by hiring milk men to work for them and delivered products to the consumer without additional middle men. The number of shares each farmer received in these types of associations where often based on the number of milk producing cows they contributed.
