Salem and Boston Stage Company. This company was founded by Richard Manning, Jr. (1755-1813). He most notably, the maternal grandfather of Nathaniel Hawthorne. He was a blacksmith born in Ipswich and moved to Salem before 1774. The stage was very successful and enabled Manning to acquire a great deal of land in Maine. After his death the stage was managed by Hawthorne's uncle, Robert Manning (1784-1842). Many family members worked for the stage, including Hawthorne himself, who worked as a bookkeeper when he was 16 years old (1820-1821).
Stock. Issued in 1829. #148. Its difficult to see in the scan but this certificate has a wonderfully stage coach image within the wax seal.
