Commonwealth Avenue Street Railway Company.   Opened in Newton in 1896, the electric trolley carried passengers from Lake Street to Auburndale. In order to increase business, they built an amusement park at the end of the trolly line. It opened in 1897 and was a big hit. It was named Norumbega Park. In 1904, the railway merged with Newton Street Railway, which in turn was acquired by the Middlesex and Boston Railway in 1909. The part lasted much longer, surviving till 1965. Most of land was taken over by the Marriott Corporation, which built a hotel there which opened in 1969. Local readers will know this as the Marriott hotel on Route 9 and at the 128 junction.
